Some of you already know I publish under another pen name, and since July, that's where I've been directing my attention.
Back in November, I made the announcement I was gearing up to release a new magical fantasy series loosely based on King Arthur in the middle of this year
Since making that announcement, several concerns have cropped up, and now I'm suffering from a conundrum, and I'm going to need your assistance to solve it.
On the one hand...under this pen name, I have a reasonably successful YA series (Relevance) but I also have two underperforming YA series that will probably never earn back the money it cost to publish them.
This makes me hesitant to publish under this pen name.
On the other hand...I love writing romantic suspense for adults and can produce them quickly and cheaply, plus I have an audience happy to purchase when I release a new book.
Herein lies the rub...
Publishing a new YA series is going to take stacks of money and a lot of my time.
How much money? Approx. NZ$1200 and that's before marketing.
Since my resources are finite, and I have no way of gauging interest until after I've commissioned covers, begun editing, etc. it is a huge risk to undertake a new series.
Just to confuse things further...
If I do publish with the elements I have in mind, I'd need to publish it into a new market, with a new pen name so I don't disappoint my current readers who expect dystopian.
Are you as confused as I am yet?
Phew...so, after months of indecision, here's my possible solution...
It is much less a risk for me to write and publish a SINGLE book in my best selling series (Relevance) than it is to commit to a new series that may not sell as well under this pen name.
While The Relevance Series is a completed story as it stands, I did allow myself room to expand on the story world and to tie up a few loose ends.
If there was enough interest, I'd finish Cristan and Mallory's story on a happy note, and effectively set up an entirely new set of characters who could carry on with another series set in the same world.
This is where I need FEEDBACK.
I have NO way of knowing whether there is any interest until I slap a pre-order up.
If I do put a .99 pre-order up, minus the cover, and only a blurb, if I fail to produce that book, I lose my pre-order privileges for 12 months.
Obviously, that's not something I'm going to do without knowing if the interest is there.
If there was enough, to protect myself, I'd put a long pre-order up (12 months), and use the level of pre-orders to help me decide how fast to write and publish.
The larger the amount of pre-orders, the more motivation I have to write FASTER.
So, in case that's all a jumbling incoherent mess...
If you would be interested in another Relevance book, and a new series (set in the same world with possible sporadic appearances from Mallory and Cristan) tell me.
I need to make a decision and I can't do that without input from my readers.
I'm always going to be writing prolifically (God willing) but I do need to make a call very soon.
The question isn't whether I keep writing, it's WHAT I keep writing.
The answer is totally up to you...
Sending you Aroha (Love) from New Zealand
